Blogs, Message Boards, and Facebook Pages

When I posted a little comment about my Duluth Message Board (a parody project) yesterday, I had no idea that the comment thread would end up being what it is at this time -- 32 comments. I think it just proves that when the subject of the discredited duluthcitizensblog.com comes up -- it can generate comments. Does anyone remember this from Brandon Stahl's blog last year? Fedora and duluthcitizensblog -- 89 comments.

Since then, the message board has been driven off a cliff. Does Fedora still tacitly endorse the message board? Carinda Horton rightly called it "very sad." The message board is effectively dead. I think most Republicans in Duluth (except for maybe one city councilor) would like to see it go away.

I believe that this year Facebook pages are going to be "where the action is." Blogs like John Rathe's Duluth Politics will still be very relevent, but 1980s style message boards are going to be irrelevant this election season.

Tony thanks again for a mention of the sites. I do agree that the on line buzz will happen this year on facebook and other such sites. I know in just a few days my facebook sites have a huge number of hits.

Now if people would just start taking part more. I know however we are still a ways out from the heated political season.

The sites have also helped boost my numbers at the blog. Again wish more people would take part but what do you do.

I hope your FB discussions will pick up steam, John, but people are going to be more careful of what they post when others can check their identities, and so there's accountability.

I think that's why Brandon's blog's popularity is soaring: people post anonymously, but Brandon does moderate out the more crazy and inappropriate comments, and there is some accountability. And you can rest assured, Brandon doesn't make up comments or post only those comments that he agrees with.

One reason nobody takes the DCB seriously anymore is that no one knows their agenda -- besides harassing people, that is. It's not to get their candidates elected, that's for sure, as we can see from the last election results.

And the ongoing problem with the moderators making up comments and putting other people's names on them, as well as altering comments people post, has destroyed that blog's credibility, now that most people who care know that about them. I'd like to hope they'd get bored of themselves and hand the blog over to someone responsible, but as long as you have jerks like Danny egging them on and giving them talking points, I doubt they will.

But good luck with FB, I will have to check it out.

John, I just checked out your FB discussions and see that Danny G has already hijacked it. Par for the course. Since I think he's a troll who tries to silence other people who post anything anywhere online by making fun of them in a very mean-spirited way on his show, I doubt your FB discussions will really pick up steam. Most of us know what Danny's all about. As far as I'm concerned, the only difference between him and the other DCBers is that he puts his name to his trolling and harassment of his fellow citizens.

CK, I think John will be able to control the troll with his administrative powers. And the troll won't be able to use sockpuppets there.

Does anyone remember the original "Big Iron"? Who had the biggest problem with him? Today's "Big Iron" isn't the original, today he is a sockpuppet -- I wonder who for.

I was thinking that, Tony, that this "Big Iron" is very different from the original "Big Iron," the two are definitely, definitely different people.

I really hope John does keep Danny in check.

It's interesting, that the DNT is cutting down on people's ability to post comments on their website. I'm sure it has a lot to do with two trolls: Dr. Z and Dan H. They hijacked every single thread there! And, of course, we all know what happened to the Budgie's online comments section -- and Danny's primary role in that happening. Like I said, there's really no difference at all between Danny the rest of the DCBers except that he puts his name to it, and they don't.

I predict that, with the DNT cutting back on reader comments on its website, because a few trolls insisted on hijacking all the threads and spewing venom, that the trolls are going to swarm all over other local blogs, like Brandon Stahl's blog. It's already happening: Dr. Z, who many believe is just another handle for prolific DCB participant Big Iron, is already trying to hijack Brandon's blog. He just can't help himself, his compulsive and toxic blogging is an addiction. It's too bad he doesn't add anything to the discussion, but just wants attention. I suggest everyone simply ignore him and not respond to his stupidity. Maybe he'll then go back to the DCB where he belongs.
